The quick read
Key points
- Net income and cash movement can differ.
- Loan principal, owner activity and asset purchases need their own context.
- Use matching dates and scope when comparing reports and statements.
Begin with a consistent period
Choose the same start and end dates for your income and cash flow review. Confirm the portfolio and available filters. A statement for one bank account and a report for the entire portfolio do not represent the same scope.
Read beyond operating income
Cash can move without creating revenue or an operating expense. Examples include an owner contribution, borrowing, repayment of loan principal or an asset purchase. Review the recorded transaction type and accounts behind each movement rather than expecting every bank change to appear in net income.
Use the lender's payment detail
A mortgage withdrawal may contain principal, interest and escrow. These components affect different accounts. Use lender records to check the split and review escrow disbursements separately. A payment template speeds entry but still needs comparison with the statement.
Follow differences back to entries
Inspect the detail behind an unusual amount. Check transfers, opening balances, duplicate deposits and unbooked imports before changing anything. Explain unresolved items when sharing an export, and reconcile the relevant bank accounts rather than using a report total as a substitute for reconciliation.

Common questions
Why does my bank balance differ from income?
Income is a period result. A bank balance also reflects prior balances and cash movements such as transfers, loans and owner activity.
Do unbooked imports appear in these reports?
Unbooked feed rows do not affect the ledger. Review any automatically booked matches and the rows still awaiting a booking decision.
